The Logitech Mice That Weren't
They get wonderfully cheeky about them too, saying that the hockey-puck mouse "looked cool but turned out to be less than comfortable." (WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE.) Here are a few of the more ridiculous ones, but be sure to check out the whole run. It's hard to believe some these even made it off the page, much less into a polished, physical form in some cases. Of course, none of them will ever top my beloved, retired MX500.
Really fantastic. I wish more companies would show us some of their aborted lab creatures.

Sigma mouse: make your Powerpoints more entertaining to yourself
If you bore people to death with crappy, lazy powerpoint slideshows on a regular basis, you should waste some more of your company's time and money by buying a fancy mouse created just for that purpose. The Sigma SGM2 mouse is meant to be held as shown and waved around in the air when you emphatically make a point during your presentations. You can move the mouse using your thumb and that little trackball, but really all you need to do is to click the slides forward. Oh look, it's a paragraph of text! I'll just read that out loud for you, as you couldn't read it on your own. Do you like my choices in clipart? Look at that man singing, he has a top hat and a whip! He looks like he's from the circus! Now let's all go out there and be more productive, team!
Floating mouse will, like, totally blow your mind
We've covered some pretty gimmicky gaming mice before, but none of them come close the the awesomeness of this (also gimmicky) hover mouse. Actually hovering above your mouse pad, the hover mouse certainly stands out from all other mice, no matter how many LED lights get stuck into them. It uses electromagnetic hovering technology to do its thing, and it still has a respectable 6,000-dpi accuracy. Bring it to your next LAN party for that extra level of intimidation while you're setting your rig up. The only thing I would worry about is what happens when your hand isn't on the mouse. Does it stay still, or does it float around like an air hockey puck? I mean, in addition to floating around it's also wireless, so what's to stop it from floating its way right off your desk? These are questions you can answer by plunking down $75 and testing it out. Let me know, friends.
Just like games, computer mice go 3D
For the last couple of decades, game controllers have been sprouting more and more buttons, party because today's games have tons of fancy 3D graphics. For PC games, though, you're relying an awful lot on the mouse, which is a stubbornly 2D interface (after all, most mice don't let you move in all three dimensions). Not so with Sandio's terribly named 3D GameO' mouse, which has buttons on its sides for selecting which axis (x, y, or z) you want to be rotating around, or which plane you want to move through. It's aimed at the gaming market, although I could see it coming in handy for some designers at Industrial Light and Magic, too.
Gearlog gave the 3D GameO' a look-see and found a steep learning curve, though any gamers who think they rely on their fancy gaming keyboards too often may want to take note. The 3D mouse is available now for $80.
